Facts About Your  PC's Security:

Steps for Protection:

  • Most brand-new PC's are "pinged" by a rogue, malicious computer within 15 minutes of first being plugged into an Internet connection

  • Your new PC is most likely to be significantly  behind in required Windows Security Updates, antivirus and antispyware definitions as shipped from the factory

  • Windows Firewall on Windows XP SP2 equipped computers will  block incoming packets ONLY and not outgoing as possibly requested and triggered by some viruses, worms, Trojans, key-loggers, rootkits and spyware

  • Your bundled trial antivirus, antispyware and/or firewall  software is not optimally configured for security and updates, and usually expires in 6 months time

  • Internet Explorer is exploited more often than any other Internet browser, and as shipped,  is extremely vulnerable to dangerous viruses and spyware

  • If your wireless router is not configured with encryption, you are inviting hackers into your family network, and you may be personally  liable for any crimes committed!

  • Install a good quality wireless router, even if you do not plan on using wireless, and configure it with WPA encryption.  Routers provide Stateful Packet Inspection to protect from intrusion. You may change your mind about wireless at a later time

  • Install a good software firewall to protect against intrusion and outbound traffic by viruses and malware

  • Install antivirus software and configure it for daily definition updates

  • Update your Windows operating system, and configure it for automatic updates.  To manually update,

  • Install multiple antispyware software products and configure for automatic scanning

  • Install an anti-Trojan scanner

  • Install an Intrusion Detection software product

  • Periodically run the Rootkit Revealer

  • Install an alternate Internet browser, such as Firefox or Opera, and DO NOT use Internet Explorer, especially for secure web sites!

How safe are your installed software packages?

Does your PC have the most up-to-date versions of installed software?  Software vendors frequently update their software to ensure that security vulnerabilities are patched.  Secunia Software Inspector is a free service that will check your installed software, including the Windows operating system, and advise you whether any updates are required to ensure your safety.  Click on the blue graphic below to be taken to the Secunia web site and test your system.  Also below, are two live streams from Secunia listing the Top 5 Secure, as well as the Top 5 Insecure software packages installed on clients and readers of the 2 PC Geeks.
